FAQs

Here are some of the questions users have asked…we will add to this list over time.

If you have any question you’d like answered, please contact us at:

Q:Why not just use the Windows on-screen keyboard? (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Accessibility -> On-screen Keyboard)
A:The Windows on-screen keyboard actually performs software key presses each time you click an on-screen key. As a consequence, even the most basic keylogger will capture everything you ‘type’ using this utility.
Neo’s SafeKeys does not perform these software key presses, so is immune to keyloggers. If you use the hover entry mode, then you are also protected against most, if not all, screen loggers.

Q: Why doesn’t Neo’s SafeKeys allow drops into program X? (KeyPass, Opera, WoW)
A: This has been a real challenge for us. Be assured that we are looking into it, and hope to be able to resolve this for the next version, so Neo’s SafeKeys can work with as many programs as possible.

Tech speak that will probably bore most people: Most programs work fine with Neo’s SafeKeys, because they allow dragging and dropping from Windows-standard text boxes. For some reason, some programs have been programmed so that one of the following occurs:

  • they do not allow an OLE drop (ie a drag-drop) from a text box control – but they will allow an OLE drop from a rich text box control. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find a way to get a rich text box to drag-drop passwords (with a **** password mask).
  • they do not allow any OLE drags or drops to it. At all. Period. (Opera falls into this category. For more information on Opera and Neo’s SafeKeys, see our forum topic: http://www.aplin.com.au/forum/topic/opera-drag-drop-issues.)

We’d love to get Neo’s SafeKeys to work with the applications that you use. We’d be interested in hearing from anyone who knows how to get around the limitations imposed by these applications.
Note: We don’t have WoW, and haven’t done any WoW testing yet. Sorry.

Q: Is there a version of Neo’s SafeKeys for my language?
A: We have not added translation features into the current version of Neo’s SafeKeys, but would like to do so for future releases. If you are interested in assisting in the translation efforts, please email us at:

Q: Sometimes Neo’s SafeKeys doesn’t work with browser password fields that say “Enter password”. How can I get it to work?
A: This can be due to one of two things: 1) the website won’t allow you to drag-drop until you’ve at least typed into the field. Type a letter, erase the letter, then do the drag-drop… or 2) the words “Enter password” don’t disappear when you drag drop your password – try first typing a single letter in the site’s password box (to erase the “Enter Password” letters), then do the drag-drop, and finally erase the initial single letter.

Q: When trying to run Neo’s SafeKeys 2008, I keep getting this error:

“Run-time error ‘339′: Component ‘MSCOMCTL.OCX’ or one of its dependancies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.”

…How do I get Neo’s SafeKeys 2008 to run?
A:
It appears as though your computer is missing the MSCOMCTL.OCX file, which is a common Microsoft file that should be on your computer. (Neo’s SafeKeys uses this to run…)  Here’s how to correct or fix this dependency error:

1. Get MSCOMCTL.OCX and save a copy in C:\WINDOWS\system32.
It should already be on your computer – search here first. If it isn’t on your computer, you could get from another Windows computer, or Google MSCOMCTL.OCX (there are many sites that host it for downloading).

This may be all that is required. Try running Neo’s SafeKeys 2008.

…if Neo’s SafeKeys 2008 DOESN’T run, then perform this additional step:

2. Click Start –> Run, then type REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX.
