... or will it only run from a USB drive? I'd prefer the CD because otherwise you USB drive will be infested with malicious software after a while.

Neo's SafeKeys should run just fine from a CD...though I have to admit I've never tried it.

If it doesn't run directly from the CD, you could always copy it from the CD to the hard drive (eg the Desktop), and run it from there.
