Hi Al (and other Neo's SafeKeys users),

Have just posted the Neo's SafeKeys Scramble demo video. It demonstrates the "Scramble the on-screen keys AND keyboard input" feature.

You'll find it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im3XNdDEPr8

I invite everyone to post comments; I'd like to know how successful the demo video was! :)

Cheers,

Neo.

Hi Al,

Yes, it is a little time consuming to compare keys, but it does offer a certain degree of security. I figured that, as most passwords are only a handful of keystrokes long, it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience. However, if users are concerned, I suggest using the hover entry mode on the latest Beta version - faster and even safer.

I wanted to offer another way of entering passwords, in addition to using just the mouse; that's why I created the feature.

To answer your question: if you only scramble the keyboard using the "Scramble JUST the on-screen keys" feature, then the labels on the on-screen keys will scramble...but the keyboard keys won't change.
I'm not sure if it improves security much, but is a feature requested by quite a few users, so I implemented it. ;)

Cheers,

Neo.

Okay, thanks for the explanation. I did figure that out, but I felt it was too time
consuming to compare the keys to see which one needed to be pressed.

Also, if I only scramble the on-screen keyboard, how is that supposed to work?

Thanks, Al

Hi Al,

I have been putting together a video guide to the scrambling feature, as it is a little confusing. Hope to have it out in the next day or two, so check back here.

Some overall things about scrambling, to assist in the meantime:

The scrambling is designed so you can use the keyboard to enter passwords into Neo's SafeKeys, but still fool many keyloggers.

Here's how it works when using the "Scramble the on-screen keys AND keyboard Input" feature:
Just say, after scrambling, the left hand home keys (the keys that are labelled on your keyboard as "a", "s", "d" and "f") now have new labels on the on-screen keyboard, say they now show the labels "n", "2", "y" and "c".
This means that now, when you are using Neo's SafeKeys and you press the keyboard key that says "a", Neo's SafeKeys will register the letter "n" (because on the on-screen keyboard relates the "n" letter with the "a" keyboard key).
This works similarly for the "s" keyboard key, which will now register "2".
The "d" keyboard key will now register a "y", and the "f" keyboard key will now register a "c".

Therefore, if you had a password of "cn2y", you would actually press the following keys on your physical keyboard: "fasd". And "fasd" is what a keylogger would see (not your password of "cn2y").

I know this is a little convoluted and hard to understand; this is why I'm putting together a demonstration video.

Cheers,

Neo.

Also, I noticed that when you scramble on screen keys and keyboard input, the keyboard input is not scrambled when entering text in another application such as notepad. What good is that?

Hi,

I'm not sure how this is supposed to work. When I enable scrambling for screen and keyboard, the password is scrambled after entering from the keyboard. When I drag the password to a pw input box, it is still scrambled. Doesn't SafeKeys unscramble the password?

I tried scramble .. enter pw via keyboard ... then unscramble before dragging and dropping the pw. I'm using 2.3.0 portable to test.
