Hi,

Thank you for your answer.

I dont’t exactely understand why you suggest to edit the *ini file although the keyboard layout is in a *ing file.
But it doesn’t matter. I’ve made a new Swiss French keyboard *ing file (see attachment) that could be useful to other users.

Having said that, I notice 2 bugs (on my PC) :
- The 2 cursors (hover delay and transparency) don’t work (or very rarely !).
- No bip with « beep on hover entry ».

Furthermore,
- What is the usefulness of a long (2500 ms) « hover delay » ?
- Do the previous keyboard entry features (Scramble the on-screen keys etc.) still exist in the V3 ?
- I noticed that when Neo’s safekeys is active, it deactivates my KeyScrambler software.

See you soon

Thanks for the post. It looks as though there is a bug there that I need to resolve.

In the meantime, I have created a page for keyboard layouts, and have placed one that was sent in by a user, Tomas.

http://www.aplin.com.au/neos-safekeys-v3/keyboard-layouts

You should be able to customise Tomas' Czech/Slovak language file for your needs.

Neo’s SafeKeys 3.1

Hello, I woul’d like to create a new keyboard but haven't understood the indications :

« Create a copy of the NSKconfig.ini file (with a new name), and then edit this file ».

But when editing this file, it only appears :

[Settings]

Transparency=252

You say : « Simply replace the characters you wish to change ». How to do that ??

Thanks !

Though I haven't tried it myself, you may wish to see if the new Injection Mode in Neo's SafeKeys v3 allows for password transfers with Yahoo Messenger. I have a feeling that it may just work.

Hi

I am a new user Neo Safe Key. I used this program last months. This happens because of frequent theft of password in Facebook.

The hackers use keylogger program, especially in the internet cafe where I often use. The aim is to steal chips poker in zynga texas holdem poker, the third biggest game in FB.

I am delighted, with Neo Safe Key; I am free access without fear hacker can break my FB password.

Only if there's a little advice, we recommend the Neo Safe Key applications can also be used in Yahoo Messenger (YM). I see drag and drop technique, can not be used in the YM. This is the point gap for hackers to break back in and steal the password.

Lastly, I think the Safe Key Neo-makers will be given a place in heaven.

Hi,

I have no reason to believe that Safekeys is available from any other site, but do you think it might be a good idea to post the md5 hash for your programme to ensure that if the programme is available elsewhere, and is downloaded, that it has not been adjusted in any way.

Just a thought.

I'd suggest you updating to version 3, as it is more secure and offers some new features over the previous version (eg the new 'Injection mode').

Please know that Neo's SafeKeys has been designed to augment security a Windows OS only. I haven't done any development, testing or security analysis on Linux.

I have just noticed Safekeys v3.
I have downloaded v3, but still have v2 on my machine. Is there any good reason to keep v2?

Have been doing some investigations, but haven't found anything yet. Everything works great on my test/friend systems, and I can't find any reason for characters not coming up.

...the only possible thing is that you may not have the correct font (but then the keys would also be blank).

Sorry about the delay. If I come up with something, I'll let you know..

I dont see the green flash at all....I see no characters in the input box in standard/hover mode. I thought it was my HIPS program causing the issue, but i used the older versions of safekeys & they worked fine with the program turned on. My PC not slow dual core duo :) Im guessing you changed something since the v3 alpha for my PC not to see no characters in the input box.

The only programs im running in the background are Comodo Firewall 4.0 which i let safekeys have access to. Also Geswall its a HIPS program. If its denying safekeys something i would've seen a message. Geswall i selected safekeys as a untrusted & trusted to start it so im trying every combo. Even compatibility mode vista/XP to open.

Hi dom77,

Strange bug...though I must say that I haven't been able to do any testing on Windows 7 (I'm still running XP).
Will do some research though.
One avenue of investigation is the protective layer; on slower computers it shows up as a quick green flash over the keyboard when SafeKeys starts. Do you see the green flash at all?
Oh - and do any characters go to the input box at the bottom when you use either of the hover modes?

As for the Colemak layout - this is possible. The keyboard layout is configurable. I'll be updating the beta in a day or so, and it improves the ease of keyboard layout management.

Hi neo

I got a bug with the latest beta. If i try to click something it doesn't appear in the input box below the onscreen keyboard. I mean no characters, nothing! blank... The v3 alpha version & earlier versions worked fine. I tested it using it on a usb drive & in windows. I got the same result.

Hopefully i can use the Colemak layout if needed im about to swtich :)

No, there isn't an equivalent of Neo's SafeKeys for Linux/Ubuntu.

However, I've done a test, and Neo's SafeKeys does seem to work on Ubuntu using WINE.

Many would argue that there isn't really much need for a SafeKeys equivalent on Linux.

I'd generally agree with this for most users for two reasons:

There are a LOT more viruses targeting Windows machines, over Linux/Unix or Mac

Many there are more public machines that have Windows as the primary operating system.

Now, that said, malware protection like SafeKeys is a still not a bad idea on all platforms. Even though Linux/Unix is pretty rock solid, there are possibilities for infection - why else would continuous patching be required?

...Malware writers are always looking for new ways to infect more machines.

Another update: The (forthcoming) new version, Neo's SafeKeys v3 does work with KeePass.

Dominik (from KeePass) has tested and it works great.

The new version of SafeKeys will be released within about a month's time.

Thanks for the response.

When banking using public pc's do you recommend any other packages that can be used with Safekeys that will enhance security? For example, a browser on the USB stick?

Thanks

Am I right in thinking that generating random characters into the password is not supported in mouse mode.

That's correct. There is no security benefit to be had by generating random characters while using mouse mode.

Another challenge is making it obvious to the user what key is being applied in Hidden Mode, and at the same time ensuring loggers are kept in ignorance. I have noticed that some public pc's, particulalry in libraries, do not support sound (Beep).

True - sound is the best option, but isn't always available. The libraries near me allow people to use headphones, which would assist.

Am I right in thinking that generating random characters into the password is not supported in mouse mode. I could not get this to function. On stopping the random generation, everythig was removed? This might be a useful addition.

Neo's SafeKeys should run just fine from a CD...though I have to admit I've never tried it.

If it doesn't run directly from the CD, you could always copy it from the CD to the hard drive (eg the Desktop), and run it from there.

Let us know how you go. Neo.

... or will it only run from a USB drive? I'd prefer the CD because otherwise you USB drive will be infested with malicious software after a while.

I would recommend you use the mouse entry modes only. These are the safest.

As an indication, I have removed the keyboard modes from the forthcoming version, as the mouse modes give much better protection.

Regarding removing the password mark, I would not recommend it, as you open yourself to screen loggers and field scraping.

would you advise randomising both the Safekeys keyboard and the real keyboard?

Is there a security issue in revealing the password in Safekeys, that is removing the mask?

Thanks

From the features page: (http://www.aplin.com.au/?page_id=349)

When enabled, the Neo’s SafeKeys will get the comptuer to automatically type random characters into the password box. This way you can type your password on your keyboard, and it will be hidden (or obsfucated) within random characters. Most keyloggers will only capture a long string of random characters.

When you start the ‘Hide password in amongst random characters’ feature, Neo’s SafeKeys will begin typing random characters. When you stop the ‘Hide password in amongst random characters’ feature, Neo’s SafeKeys will stop typing random characters, and will remove all randomly-typed characters from the password box.

For example, if your password is “password123!”, depending on how fast you type (the slower you type, the more effective this is), most keyloggers will log something like:
“re407f9rtpcfalsls98wmozrb45df8mer1u22xu3iv4wXJ!FC%wfy9dkp1″.

You’ll note that the automatically-generated random characters are not typed at regular intervals; this timing randomisation better hides your actual key presses in amongst the random auto-generated key presses.

Note that whilst this is effective against most keyloggers, kernel and hardware keyloggers will not be fooled. (Tech speak: hardware keyloggers and kernel-based keyloggers will not be affected, as they intercept the keys prior to Windows getting the keystrokes. This is effective against most hook-based keyloggers, as Neo’s SafeKeys 2008 sends the random keystrokes via Windows, and the hook-based keyloggers can’t discern the random from the real keystrokes.)

Hope this helps!

Just tried: 'Hiding password among random characters.'
When this option is enabled the entry box seems to enter many characters and I can't see what I am doing. How is this function used? The programme then reverts to standard mode.
